What is a dynamic electricity tariff?

A dynamic electricity tariff adjusts to price fluctuations on the electricity exchange rather than charging a fixed rate per kilowatt-hour. Unlike conventional tariffs, where the electricity price remains constant, a dynamic tariff aligns with hourly price changes determined by supply and demand. With a dynamic electricity tariff, you pay the current purchase price on the electricity exchange, to which statutory charges such as taxes and levies, as well as a surcharge from the electricity provider, are added.

How does this work in practice?

Simulation

Achieving savings with dynamic electricity tariffs

The graphic illustrates the interaction between electricity market prices, PV surplus, and the performance of the my-PV device.

With my-PV's new feature, this interaction will work seamlessly and fully automatically. The my-PV device uses either the renewable, cost-effective electricity from the grid or the surplus from the PV system for heating, provided a PV system is installed. Try the simulation and calculate your possible savings!

The simulation above shows the electricity market prices (EPEX Spot, 60 min, Day-Ahead) excluding VAT for various countries. Please note that these are not end-customer prices. For example, the HOURLY tariff from the Austrian energy provider aWATTar adds additional costs to the displayed market prices, such as a balancing energy component of 3% of the market price, a procurement component of 1.5 cents/kWh, as well as regional grid fees and balancing energy components. These additional components are not considered in the simulation shown below. Furthermore, a VAT rate of 20% is applied to all components.

Benefits of using dynamic electricity tariffs for water heating

The advantages at a glance

Cost savings through flexible usage
Consumers can deliberately use electricity during cheaper periods, effectively lowering their energy costs.
Transparent pricing
Variable electricity tariffs provide clear insight into price fluctuations.
Contribution to the energy transition
By using electricity during times of high renewable energy availability, consumers actively support the energy transition.
Benefit from negative market prices
In cases of electricity surpluses, consumers can even earn money by using electricity during periods of negative prices.

What are my-PV's next steps?

At my-PV, we are driven by the belief that everyone has the right to clean and renewable energy. The my-PV team is already working intensively on an intelligent solution that enables consumers to make the most of dynamic electricity tariffs, allowing them to reduce their energy costs in the long term.
