New VAT reduction boosts PV self-consumption in France
Starting October 2025, France will apply a reduced VAT rate of 5.5% to residential photovoltaic systems up to 9 kW. This measure aims to make solar energy more attractive and affordable for homeowners.
To qualify for the reduced VAT, solar modules must meet strict environmental and manufacturing standards, including a low carbon footprint and limited use of critical materials such as silver, lead, and cadmium. The goal is to promote cleaner production and reduce the overall environmental impact of solar technology.
Energy Management Systems (EMS) that meet these standards are also eligible for the reduced VAT when sold together with certified low-carbon solar modules. This includes my-PV’s intelligent power diverters, allowing installers to apply the 5.5% VAT rate when my-PV products are combined with compliant modules.
Good to know
From October 1, 2025, our products will be eligible for the 5.5% VAT rate, providing strong selling points for customers.
This policy change comes at a time when feed-in tariffs are falling sharply. From early 2025, residential PV systems up to 9 kW will receive only €0.04 per kilowatt-hour for exported electricity. Direct on-site use of solar energy therefore becomes far more profitable than feeding it into the grid – a strong incentive to pair new PV systems with my-PV solutions.
Smart use of solar energy with PV heat
The most efficient way to use surplus solar energy is converting it into heat instead of feeding it into the public power grid. my-PV offers simple and cost-effective solutions that allow homeowners to use excess PV power for domestic hot water or space heating – without requiring battery storage. With an 8 kWp system, self-consumption can increase by up to 70%.
my-PV products such as AC•THOR or AC•THOR 9s linearly regulate the power output based on available solar energy, heating water in boilers or buffer tanks. Installation and retrofitting are straightforward, and compatibility with a wide range of inverters often eliminates the need for additional devices like the my-PV WiFi Meter, saving up to €300. Our products are compatible with around 80% of existing inverter brands, offering greater flexibility for installation and integration into existing systems. Thanks to its open system design, PV heating can also be combined with a battery storage to further boost self-consumption.
Real-life example from France
A customer in Schillersdorf, France, uses the AC•THOR 9s to heat his home, water, and pool with solar energy. His system now covers most of his heating needs and has reduced heat pump usage by around 40%.
He particularly values the versatility of the solution, which allows him to use PV electricity not only for household appliances but also for hot water, heating, and the pool.
