Smart meter rollout in Benelux region on track – my-PV offers compatible solutions

From 2025 it is necessary for every PV homeowner in Flanders to replace analog with digital meter – the Belgian grid operator Fluvius reports that the rollout of digital energy meters to the last major group of solar panel owners in Flanders remains on schedule.

Since October 2024, Fluvius has installed 67,000 digital meters, leaving 336,000 installations planned for this year. By the end of February, more than 4.4 million digital electricity meters had been installed across Flanders.

The transition to smart meters is essential to manage the new demands on the power grid. in Belgium, where the rapid and ongoing expansion of photovoltaic (PV) systems is placing new demands on the power grid. Especially during the summer months, PV systems generate more electricity than the grid can absorb. The smart meter rollout is one measure for securing grid stability by forming the basis for flexible energy management.

Smart meters also enable better control over energy consumption, offer potential savings on energy bills, and reduce operational costs for the grid operator, as manual on-site meter reading becomes unnecessary.

my-PV: compatible with digital meters in the BeNeLux Region

Homeowners with PV systems in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg can now maximize the benefits of their solar installations thanks to my-PV’s compatibility with P1 Digital Meters or so-called "Slimme meter" in Dutch.

With a digital meter in place, my-PV solutions enable surplus solar energy to be converted into heat for hot water and space heating. Instead of feeding excess electricity into the public grid – an increasingly costly practice – homeowners can utilize their own PV power efficiently and economically. This not only supports the electricity grid but also delivers savings for users.

my-PV offers the ideal technology for seamless integration with digital meters across the BeNeLux region:

  • Belgium: The P1 port of the digital meter requires activation by the grid operator.

  • Netherlands: No activation is needed; the P1 port can immediately read surplus power.

  • Luxembourg: P1-port is encrypted, encrypted key is available through local grid operator

Devices such as the AC ELWA 2, AC•THOR, and AC•THOR 9s can communicate with these meters using my-PV's P1 Interface and RTU Gateway. This setup allows for direct measurement of surplus energy via the P1 port, eliminating the need for an external surplus detector and thus offering a significant cost advantage.

Installation is easy with a plug & play approach. The only prerequisite is the activation of the P1 port by the local grid operator.

Detailed installation instructions are available in the P1 Interface Installation Manual in the download section of our website.

Optimize Dynamic Tariffs – with the my-PV DTO

Digital meters also open the door to dynamic hourly electricity tariffs, offering a clear advantage to users who can flexibly adapt their energy consumption based on real-time electricity market prices. With dynamic tariffs, grid power can be consumed when prices are at their lowest – this relieves the public power grid, by using electricity in times of low demand and high availability, while benefitting from the lowest prices.

This is where the my-PV DTO (Dynamic Tariff Optimizer) comes into play:

The feature of the my-PV Cloud allows owners of IoT-enabled my-PV devices to harness not only surplus solar power but also low-cost grid electricity for generating heat. Even during cloudy days or at night, when solar generation is limited, users can efficiently use low-cost electricity from the public grid for heat. For users, this means maximum convenience: there is no need to constantly monitor electricity prices. The my-PV DTO controls heat generation fully automatically, always utilizing the most cost-effective time slots.

The rollout of smart meters creates new opportunities for PV system owners to operate their systems more efficiently and cost-effectively. my-PV solutions take this a step further – allowing homeowners to maximize the self-consumption of solar power, reduce grid dependency, and lower energy costs.
